Dr. Larry N. Shyu

Dr. Shyu was born in China in 1933. He attended schools in China and Taiwan. After graduating from university in Taiwan, he pursued graduate studies in the United States, earning a Masters of Arts from the University of Washington and a doctoral degree from Columbia University. He became a faculty member of the History Department of University of New Brunswick (UNB) in 1968, specializing in East Asian history. He retired in 1998 after 30 years of teaching. He is bestowed the honour of a Professor Emeritus of UNB.

Dr. Shyu married Teresa, a schoolteacher in Hong Kong, in 1962. Dr. Shyu has five adult children and four grandchildren.

In his academic career, Dr. Shyu has authored, edited, and co-authored eight books, 11 scholarly articles and numerous book reviews in both English and Chinese journals. He served as a visiting professor at universities in China and Taiwan, and as an external reader/examiner of doctoral dissertations for universities in Canada, Australia and Taiwan. Dr. Shyu is still active in scholarly research, attending academic conferences on an annual basis.

Dr. Shyu co-founded the Chinese Cultural Association of New Brunswick in 1977. He served on the Board of the Multicultural Association of Fredericton in the 1980s. For several years, Dr. Shyu also served in the Advisory Board for Multicultural Education set up by the New Brunswick Education Department. Dr. Shyu has also been very active assisting UNB and St. Thomas University to develop educational cooperation programs with several universities in China.

His dedication to local, cultural and community activities has earned the respect and admiration of his friends in New Brunswick.
